Harlan Baseball Gets Back to Principal Park Again

(Harlan) The Harlan baseball team has advanced to their 4th straight state tournament. The Cyclones punched their ticket to the 2014 Class 3A state tourney with a 3-1 win over Glenwood on Wednesday night in Harlan.

The game was close all the way through with Harlan denting the scoreboard first with a single run in the 4th inning. Glenwood would tie it up with their lone run of the game in the 6th inning to make it a brand new ballgame going into the bottom of the 6th. Harlan responded immediatlely with a two run 6th to win the contest 3-1. Derek Leinen and Brett Croghan both delivered clutch RBI hits for Harlan in the win. The Cyclones had just five hits in the game while holding Glenwood to four hits.

Croghan tossed the win for Harlan improving to 6-1 on the season and lowering his ERA to 1.11. The sophomore allowed only two walks plus four hits and struck out one batter.

Glenwood's season comes to an end at 23-11. The Rams won 16 of their last 19 games to close out the year. Harlan qualifies for state for the 14th time and 4th year in a row. The Cyclones, winners of  13 of their last 15 games, have been to the state tournament 12 times in the last 19 years. They take a 25-8 record to Des Moines and will play Davenport Assumption in the first round next week.

Glenwood defeats Atlantic 6-5 in Extra Innings

(Atlantic) Dru Little’s walk off double lifted Glenwood past Atlantic 6-5 in nine innings in a Class 3A District Semi-Final Baseball game at Atlantic Friday night.

Corey Bertini was hit by a pitch in the bottom of the ninth inning and scored on Dru Little’s’ walk off double to end the game.

Atlantic grabbed a 2-0 lead in the top of the first. Joey Walker singled and scored on Logan Steffens RBI. Moments later Zach Nelsen crossed the plate on an error. But the Rams answered in the bottom of the frame on Corey Bertini’s two-run homer to tie the game 2-2.

Glenwood scored two runs on three hits in the bottom of the second on RBI singles from Brady Wheeler and Cole Loeffelbein to lead 4-2. But the Trojans grabbed the lead back in the top of the third inning with three runs on one hit. Brody Petersen smacked a two-RBI single scoring Walker and Drake Roller. Tyler Thomas plated the third run for Atlantic giving the Trojans a 5-4 lead.

The Rams tied it 5-5 with a run in the bottom of the fourth and that would be all the scoring until Dru Little’s walk off double to give the Rams the 6-5 win.

Braden Wheeler picked up the win in relief for the Rams. Tristen Benn who pitched all nine inning for Atlantic took the loss.

The Rams scored six runs on nine hits. Atlantic scored five runs on seven hits. Joey Walker, Tyler Thomas and Logan Steffens each smacked two hits  for the Trojans. Bertini and Little provide the big hits for the Rams. Cobb Baker also helped the cause with two-singles in three official at bats.

Glenwood extends their record to 22-10 and faces Creston Monday in the District Final at Atlantic. The Trojans bow out at 16-13.
