Brief description of activity and station participation:
Frank and Mandy met with more than 50 students in the 4th grade and spoke about careers in broadcasting.  The students assembled mock newscasts and they were critiqued.

In the previous year we have utilized the P1 Selling Radio Training Program and are members in DDS Group 20 – a peer group of radio stations who focus on increasing sales through adequate sales training.   These programs are designed to enable station personnel to acquire skills that could qualify them for higher level positions.  General Manager William Saluk and all Account Executives are involved in this initiative.

This summer, KSOM and KSWI employed one college level intern which worked from May through July.  She obtained experience in sales, production and programming.  We also have three high school students who are employed on a part-time basis and learn the basics of EAS operation, meter readings, transmitter operation, news, public affairs and programming.

Meredith Communications sponsored a $1000 scholarship for graduating high school seniors who intend to major in radio broadcasting.  Applications for the scholarship were sent to 15 area high schools, advertised on-air and via the KSOM and KSWI websites.

Meredith Communications stations participate in local high school job shadowing programs.  A high school student will come in for 2-3 hours and “shadow” on air personalities and other staffers to get a glimpse of what careers in broadcasting entails.

Management level personnel attended an EEO refresher seminar sponsored by the Utah Broadcasters Association on February 18, 2010. The seminar was conducted by David Oxenford of David, Wright, & Tremain. Additionally, the seminar covered FCC regulatory compliance issues, new issues facing Political Advertising, Quarterly Issues Reports, Contests, and other issues facing the FCC that local and state broadcasters should pay attention to, including but not limited to the Performance Tax, Music Royalties, Embedded Advertising, etc.
